RADAR ALERT:
Mission Critical! Stop I-VAWA in its Tracks Now!!

The International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA) has been introduced in the U.S House of Representatives. I-VAWA has an innocent-sounding name that belies a radical social agenda and will export the failed polices of VAWA. Under the guise of curbing domestic violence, I-VAWA would also:

  1. Harm families around the world by promoting American rates of divorce and single parent homes.
  2. Impose radical cultural imperialism by coercing other countries to adopt harmful programs that have nothing to do with domestic violence. As one example, I-VAWA pushes an ideological Western conception of reproductive rights on countries that have very strong cultural and religious traditions.
  3. Create a new federal 'super-agency' that would control many aspects of U.S. foreign policy.
  4. Promote failed economic programs such as "comparable worth" where wages are decided by unelected government cronies.
  5. Funnel millions of taxpayer money to ideologically-driven organizations such as Legal Momentum (N.O.W.'s Legal Defense Fund), to the tune of $175 million a year.

It is much easier to stop new legislation than modify existing legislation. If we can show real grassroots opposition we can defeat this bill. Congressman Howard Berman (D-Ca) Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs is the sponsor of I-VAWA.

A common strategy in passing bills is to have the Chairman of a committee sponsor the bill and then get the ranking member from the other party to co-sponsor the bill. The ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs is Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen's (R -Fla). She has not signed up to be a co-sponsor of the bill and we need to keep it that way.

We are asking everybody to contact Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen's (R -Fla) and ask her to oppose I-VAWA bill # H.R. 5927. Her contact info is:

Phone: 202-225-3931
Fax: 202-225-5620

Please phone or fax her and use any or all of the reasons above to make your case. If you are from Florida please mention this in the call. As always be polite and courteous.
